AP Lab Standards And Objectives

As with all AP classes, the College Board determines the curriculum and can be found in the AP Chemistry Course Description book on the college board website (http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/sub_chem.html). The laboratory portion is detailed in the section, Guidelines for Recommended Laboratory Experience. As the title suggests, there are no real standards but instead has guidelines on what the learner needs to know and be able to perform. There are general guidelines and a list of 22 suggested labs to be completed. However, the lab titles are general with no specific reference to a laboratory manual. So, determining a set of standards are arbitrary for each teacher as long as you perform the 22 suggested labs. I have determined from reviewing the above guidelines that the objectives (Standards) for the lab class are: Learners should be able to:

S1) Determine the correct procedures or processes for the lab

S2) Determine the correct equipment for the procedures including noting significant figure considerations.

S3) Proper observe, collect, analyze data and making appropriate conclusions
