Congratulation!! (Revised Aug 2012)

Again, Welcome to AP Chemistry. I hope this year will be both enjoyable and challenging. To start off, you will be required to complete the following work by the first day of class (next school year).

Set# Reading : Homework

Set#1 Chapter 1: Pg30 #30,37,41,69,72
Set#2 Chapter 2: Pg72 #47,66,70, memorize polyatomic in AnionTable, cation w/more than one charge in CationTable, and NamingCompounds
Set#3 Chapter 3: Pg123 #15,47,49,61,67,69 (click on this webpage for help om 61,67,69 (CombustionAnalysis (a form of molecular formula (MF) or empirical formula (EF) calculation)
Set#4 Chapter 3: Pg123 #77d&e,87,90,96 (click on this webpage for help with 96 [Limiting Reactant Oultine Handout]])

The actual answer (where I can give you the answer without doing all the work) are given in SummerWorkanswerkey. Of course, you need to show all work(even for simple conversions for now) so having the answer only helps to work through problems you are having trouble with. In addition, you may want to look in the back of the AP book for the section of Selected Answers.

The only other issue for the first day is a lab safety contract. Please go to LabSafetyContract and copy, then read the Flinn Scientific Lab Safety Contract. Finally, you need to complete the Contract and sign it (both you and your parents). We will go over it on the first day of school. (I would like this completed for the first day so that we can do a lab the 2nd day of school).

For student that did not have me for first year or have fogotten, I pay close attention to sig figs and how you show your work. Therefore, I have set up the following Wiki Pages to assst you over the summer.

So look at these pages to refresh your memory. I also have provided a summary of all the rules of naming compounds from first year chemistry (NamingCompounds).

On the 1st day of class, all homework sets are due. Please have each Homework Set on a separate page(s). Therefore, you will be handing in four separate packages, one for each Homework Set.

The textbook for AP Chemistry is Zumdahl's Chemistry (Houghton Mifflin), ISBN 0-669-41794-7 (alternate, search). As I suggested, you can buy your own copy at Amazon.com. They have been going for less than $10 for book and shipping (dont need excellent condition, any condition is fine). If you can't buy one, I will leave a few copies in main office on the bookcase on the left wall of the office. We will also use the first year book for reference purposes. You should have already been given a copy of 1sr year book to keep.

If you have any questions (including disagreement with answer key) or concerns over the summer, you can e-mail me at my school email address. However, I will not be looking at my email until Aug 17ish (at the earliest). So if you have questions before that, just make a note of it and then move on to another problem (no worries).

I hope you have a good summer and enjoy.
Sincerely,
Mr. Mcleod

P.S. Please realize that the first 3 chapters are heavily math related so homework is also. Not all the concepts in this course are so math laden.
P.S.S. There is no summer work for the lab portion of class.
