Objectives of CP Atomic Structure and Atomic Mass

Essential Questions (EQ2): Are there any basic particles ?

The student should be able to (bold numbers are MA Framework Standard numbers):

1) Know the characteristics of subatomic particles including charge and location for an element.

2) Define isotope and be able to write the two symbolic representation of isotope.

3) Define atomic number and find it on a Periodic Table.

4) Define Mass Number and be able to calculate the correct number of each subatomic particle of an isotope knowing the Atomic Number and Mass Number.

4) Define atomic mass and be able to calculate atomic mass using the table method highlighted in class.

1. Trace the development of atomic theory and the structure of the atom from the Greeks to the present (Dalton, Thompson, Rutherford, Bohr, and charge cloud model).

2. Define isotope and be able to write the two symbolic representation of isotope.

3. Define atomic number and find it on a Periodic Table.

4. Define Mass Number and be able to calculate the correct number of each subatomic particle of an isotope knowing the Atomic Number and Mass Number.

5. Define atomic mass and be able to calculate atomic mass using the table method highlighted in class.
