Objectives of CP Atomic Structure and Atomic Mass - Revised 2022-2023


Essential Questions (EQ2): Are there any basic particles ?

The student should be able to::

1) Know the characteristics of subatomic particles including charge, location and what it represent of an element.

2) Define isotope and be able to write the two symbolic representation of isotope.

3) Define atomic number and find it on a Periodic Table.

4) Define Mass Number and be able to calculate the correct number of each subatomic particle of an isotope knowing the Atomic Number and Mass Number.

5) Define atomic mass and be able to calculate atomic mass using the table method highlighted in class.

6) Trace the development of the atomic theory and the structure of the atom including:
6a) Contribution prior to Dalton Atomic theory
6b) Explain Dalton Atomic theory (called Solid State Atomic Model) and update and what the theory means for matter.
6c) State what Thomson found and his Plum Pudding Atomic Model.
6d) Explain how Rutherford gold leaf experiment (his model is called Nuclear Model) shows the structure of the atom (and location of each subatomic particle type (i.e. proton, electron, neutron).
6e) Explain Bohr's Planetary Model of Atom including energy levels and # of electrons in each energy levels.

7) Be able to understand the difference between an ion and an atom with respect to number of electrons compared to number of protons. Also, be able to understand and draw symbolic representation of both cation and anion (the two different types of ions).
