Each student will be able to:
- Explain the difference between Medeleev and Moseley's Periodic Table.
- Explain the relationship of an element's position on the Periodic Table to its atomic number (i.e. Periodic law)
- Describe the Modern Periodic Law
- Relate the position of an element on the Periodic Table to its Electron Configuration. (In other words, be able to use the Periodic Table to determine electron configurations).
- Relate the chemical charateristics (reactivity) to the Family elements and how Electron configuration detemines it.(3.3)
- Be able to locate metals, non-metals, and metalloids (semi-metals) on the Periodic Table
- Describe what Coulombic force (both attractive & repelsion) and the two major factors that affect the strength of the Coulombic Force (charge on the nucleus & electron).
- Be able to determine the trends (increasing or decreasing) for the following Periodic trends, Coulombic force (CF), Atomic radii or size (AR), Ionization energy (IE), Electronegativity (EN), and Ionic Radii (IR) only for going down a group (not across a period).
- Explain how the ionic radius compares to the atomic radius for Metals and then for Non-metals. 'DO NOT usually explain general trends across Period'.
- State what type of ions metals make, and how valence electrons are affected including how many (Rule of 8). Similarly with non-metals.
- Determine if two elements will be sharing electrons (covalent bonds), transfer ("ionic bonds") or all element lose electrons (metallic bonds) knowing the two elements.
- State what a metallic bond is and how the "sea of free flowing electrons" causes the physical/chemical characteristics of good conductivity (both electric and heat) and deformable (being ductile and malleable).
Students need to be able to locate the following on the Periodic Table
- Period,Group,Alkali metal, Alkaline Earth metals, Transition Elements, Inner Transition Elements,Lanthanoid series, Actinoid series, Noble or Inert Gases, Halogen, Nitrogen Family, Oxygen Family, metals, non-metals, semi-metals or Metalloids, (s-,p-,d-,f-block elements), phase of elements @20degreeC.
