CP Questions For Flame Test Lab

ChemistryWiki | RecentChanges | Preferences

Please answer the following question in a clear concise matter and/or show all work.

1. Which pairs of ions produced similar colors (i.e. Red - Fe and Zn) )?

2. In the lab, you exposed an ion/atom to energy and you "saw" a color. Explain what is happening in the atom to produce the color. Include a diagram/figure. (Figure/diagram do not say anything so you must explain the diagram/figure in your overall explanation.

3. Why do/did you have two objectives (and their accompanying 2 conclusion) for this lab.

4. What do you call the instrument in the lab so that you could "better" differentiate which standard ion solution is the unknown? What doe the instrument produce and how does it help you in the lab?

5. Often when someone is boiling water to "cook" something, some of the water (if anything is in the water, it also goes with the water) "boil over" and lands on the flame and produces a yellow flame. Using your knowledge from the book color (see link at bottom of page), what is causing that yellow colored flame.
