Combustion Reactions Used For Energy Source And Acid Rain

ChemistryWiki | RecentChanges | Preferences

All reactions of the following type are considered Combustion reaction:

Carbon Source + O2 (g) --> CO2 (g) + H2O(g)

All carbons source that just contain C, H, and O will give the products. These compounds include hydrocarbons, alcohol, and many other compounds.

If the carbon source has other elements in them besides C,H,O then additional products are made as follows:

If N is in carbon source, you also produces NOX (nitrogen oxides, either NO (nitrogen monoxide) or NO2 (nitrogen dioxide)

If S is in carbon source, you also produce SOX (sulfur oxides, either SO2 (sulfur dioxide) or SO3 (sulfur trioxide).

So what, why do we care that combustion reactions have these products.

Reason: These gases react with water (for example the moisture in air) to produce acids. We call the products of this reaction with water Acid Rain
