Format
- Title of Lab
- Partner's name(s)
- Date
- Objective (also called Purpose)
- What are you doing in lab not what educational things are you doing
- For example, in Flame test lab, objective is to determine unknown not to learn how to calculate energy, etc. This is true at least for the first part of the lab.
- Procedure
- Usually tape in lab procedures
- If we change lab significantly from lab manual, have pre-lab notes
- Data Table
- If have numbers, will be looking for sig fig and of course units
- Calculations
- Remember, if you did not observe it, it is a calculation and need to show work
- Do all calculations as if they were on test/quiz (sig fig, SN, units, etc)
- Conclusion
- Answer question of objective/purpose, period
- Using example from objective section on flame test lab, conclusion would the unknown is barium (most likely not actual answer)
- Questions/Problems
- Remember, just like homework, need to either tape in actual questions or re-write them before doing work
- If question is descriptive/need explanation, need complete sentence. Please write clear and concise.
- If answer is calculation/math, need to show all work (as if you were taking test).
First page of every Formal lab will have the above section. (all first page start on right side page of open notebook.
- The Title, Partner's name, date, objective and conclusion must be done on this first page
- Procedure, Calculation, Questions/problem are not done on first but are complete on other pages.
- You simple write, see Page
- therefore will do all work associated with these pages on other pages (all pages are numbered)
For example, for first part of the flame test lab, the 1st page of formal write-up would look like:
Title: The Flame Test Lab
Partner's name; Jane Doe
Date: October 33,
Objective: To determine the unknown solution using 7 reference standards
Procedure: See Page 2
Data Table: See Top of Page 3
Calculations: See bottom of Page 3 and Page 4
Conclusions: The color that was emitted from the unknown solution during heating is orange. There were 2 reference standards (Ca and Cu) that also emitted orange color. Without additional information and/or experiment, can not determine which of the two is the unknown solution but it must be one of the two.
