Lab Quiz B : Types of Chemical Reaction & Determining Empirical Formula Labs

1a. In the Types of Chemical Reaction lab, you added hydrochloric acid (H1Cl1) to elemental metal zinc and a gas was formed? Give the chemical formula of the gas. _____________.

1b. What observation after you exposed the gas to a match did you observe to indicate it was that gas? _______________________

2a. In the Empirical Formula Lab, what reactant in this reaction did you NOT measure directly (give chemical formula). ___________________

2b. From your calculations, how did you know that reactant was present in the product. (Beside observations that indicate a product was formed).

___________________________________________________

3. On the back of the page, show your Empirical Formula calculations (you do not need to show any work on how you got the mass of Mg or mass of O2).

4. Also on the back of the page, show the balanced complete (sometime called molecular) chemical reaction and all work to show how one gets the net ionic reaction for the 2nd reaction in the Single Replacement section in the Types of Chemical Reaction lab (It is NOT the reaction with Hydrochloric acid).

5. In a sentence or two, answer the following question in the space below.
In the Empirical Formula Lab, most all the crucibles looked like they were "dirty". Why could you use the crucible even if there was solid at bottom of the crucible (it is assumed that the crucible has been used in several lab before you used it).
