Bonding II and Intermolecular Force (IMF)

Essential Question: Do you believe that? (theory explains observations)

Each student will be able to:

1. Using the knowledge from Lewis Dot Structures VSEPR (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion), predict the geometry and bond angle of simple molecules and polyatomic ions. [4.4](4.4)

2. Understand and explain Hybrization as the theoretical basis of VSEPR and how to determine the hybrization (sp, sp2,etc) on a central atom given the Lewis Dot Structure.[4.4]

3. Determine the Bond Polarity (BP) between two atoms using the knowledge of each atom's electronegativity (EN). (4.3)

4. Using BP and the molecular geometry, determine (explain) the Molecular Polarity (MP) of a species. Be able to explain the similarities and difference between polar (dipole) molecules and non-polar molecules.

5. Identify the 4 types of intermolecular forces (London Dispersion Forces (LDF), Dipole - Dipole, Hydogen bonding, Ionic bond and Metallic bond) present based on molecular geometry and polarity (either bond or molecular). For LDF, dipole - dipole and Hydrogen bonding, the student needs to know and understand what causes each type of IMF to have higher or lower force within each of these groups.relative strength of these substance for each what causes molecules to have varying degrees of strength for [4.5]

Updated 2006 - (4.5)Identify how hydrogen bonding in water affects a variety of physical, chemical, and biological phenomena (such as surface tension, capillary action, density, and poiling point).
