Objectives of Energy - Revised 2013-2014

Essential Question: Are there any basic skills/theory in the study of chemistry?

The student should be able to:(bolded number are MA Framework Standard numbers)
Show all work in mathematical problems as stated in class.

Energy
1. Understand and give example of the Law of Conservation of Energy including giving example of kinetic and potential energies.[10.1](6.4)
2. Understand and be able to explain the 2nd and 3rd Law of Thermodynamics including a) recognize that there is a natural tendency for systems to move in a direction of disorder or randomness (entropy), defintion of heat flow and the two conditions for absolute zero and why.
3. Define entropy and how it relates to the 3rd Law of Thermodynamics.
4. Explain the difference between heat and temperature.[6.2]
5. Explain the difference between an absolute and relative temperature scale and give example of each.
6. Explain the Kinetic Molecular Theory and how it applies to temperature and 2nd Law of Thermodynamics.[1.1], [1.3](1.3)
7. Using information from EndoExothermicReactionLab, explain the difference between an exothermic and endothermic reactions including activation energy and the difference between the PER and PEP.[10.3](6.4)
8. Be able to explain Calorimetry and be able to calculate calorimetry problems.
9 Be able to explain the significance of the sign of the energy/heat value. ("+" sign indicate system absorb energy and "-" system releases energy)
11. Be able to explain how the particles of solid, liquid, and gas are different, the energies of these particles. Also be able to relate to the standard heating curve (Temp vs. Energy graph.). Explain the difference between a gas and vapor and an definition of boiling based on KMT.

12. Be able to define temperature (exactly as I have defined them).
