Phase of Matter

Essential Question: Do you believe that? (theory explains observations)

Each student will be able to:

1. Using the Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT), explains a Heating curve. As part of this, explain the behavior of matter as it undergoes phase change (transition). (1.3 and 6.3)

2. As part of the Heating curves (and KMT), describe the four states of matter (solid, liquid, gas, plasma) in terms of energy, particle motion, and phase transitions.[1.3](1.3)

3. Using the knowledge of Intermolecular Forces (IMF), explain physical properties including melting point, evaporation, boiling point, distillation and density.[1.1](1.1)

4. Using the knowledge of IMF, explain why different substances can be in different phases at room temperature (or any constant temp). Be able to relate this to where one substance's heating curves is relative to another substance's heating curve.

5. Calculate latent and sensible heat given specific heats (solid & liquid phase) and Heat of Vaporization / Condensation and Heat of Fusion / Crystallization.

6. Understand and define crystal lattice and interactions between solids and water including hydrate, anhydrous, hygroscopic, deliquescent.

7. Understand the general trend of densities between the solid and liquid phase and how water is a special case.

8. Explain sublimination.
