Answer the following questions using your notes from class discussion/lecture on Hybridization (Chem328 Honor students only).


1) When atoms create covalent bonds, their atomic orbitals "turn into" hybridized orbitals. What phrase do you use to relate these two different types of orbitals?


2) To determine the number of hybridized orbitals a central atom has, you sum up what two "things"?

3) Explain once you have answered Question 2 above, how do you figure out the "name" of the hybridized orbitals?


4) The Rule of Eight state that all atoms, after bonding, want ..... and elements that are in the 3rd row of Periodic Table (3rd energy level) can exceed 8. What do these elements have that the other elements don't. Do not explain why state what it is.
