CP Overview of Solutions
Three Overarching Principle
1) Like dissolves Like -
- polar solvent dissolve polar solute & ionic solute
- non-polar solvents dissolve non-polar solute
2) Base particles of solute particles goes in empty space between base particles of solvent particles.
3) Solute particles get in way of solvent particles
Solution -
Definition:
Solute -
Solvent -
Making a consistent solution (Concentration)
Name of Concentration terms: Molarity (M), molality (m), mass percent, mole percent, ppm
Molarity: equation:
Calculating Molarity (M) of a solution
- Finding M with mole solute and volume of solution
- Finding M with grams solute and volume of solution
Calculating mass of solute to get a Molarity of a known volume solution

When you JUST add solute into a solvent to make a solution
1) Unsaturated solution -
2) Saturated solution -
3) Saturated solution with undissolved solute in bottom of container (or top)
