2020-2021 Objectives of Chemical Bonding

General Understanding of When Atoms Come Together

1) Be able to identify an element as metal, non-metal or semi-metals from its location on the Periodic Table.

2) Be able to explain what a covalent bond is, what elements would create one, the name of the most common compound you get from this bond and the base unit(s) (or particle).

3) Be able to explain what a "ionic bond" (does not really exist) is, what elements would create one, the name of the compound you get from this "bond", and the base unit(s) (or particle).

4) Be able to explain what a "metallic bond" is, what elements would create one and the main components of the metallic bond.

5) Be able to tell if there is a covalent bond, "ionic bond" or metallic bond between two elements.

Already been tested on this as of Feb 2021

Metallic Bond

1) Explain the components of a metallic bond including drawing figures to explain the physical properties of metals including how they relate to ionic compounds.

Covalent Bonding - General Information
(Note: look at Basic Covalent Bonding LDS Notes and HW)
1) Name the 3 parts of the Localized Electron Theory (chemical bonding model we use) and be able to explain what each part does.

2) Be able to name three different types of bonds and which one is a "true chemical bond".

3) Be able to determine if two atoms coming together would share ve- (form covalent bond) by knowing the ΔEN (Electronegativity difference).

4) Be able to name the two different species that have covalent bonding.

Covalent Bonding - Lewis Dot Structures and Molecular Geometry (VSEPR)

1) Determine the Lewis Dot Structure (LDS) for covalent bonding species (e.g. molecular cpds and polyatomic ions). This includes 1)total number of valence electrons, 2)number and types of bonds and 3)number of lone pairs on central atom.

2)From the Lewis Dot Structure, give the geometry and bond angle of covalent bonding species using the information in the Worksheet for Molecular Geometry.

3) Be able to determine the hybridization of the central and an explanation of why only atoms in the 3rd Row of the Periodic Table or greater (3rd energy level or higher) can exceed the Rule of 8 (Honors Chem328 students only).

Bond Length and Bond Energy

1) Need to be able to determine which of three type of bonds (single, double and triple bond) has the longest/shortest bond length and/or bond energy and reason why.
