2021-2022 Objectives of Chemical Bonding

General Understanding of When Atoms Come Together

1) Be able to identify an element as metal, non-metal or semi-metals from its location on the Periodic Table.

2) Using the difference of Electronegativity (EN) between two atoms, be able to determine if there is a covalent bond or ionic bond. Be able to explain why these bonds exists between the two atoms especially with respect to movement of their valence electrons.

3) Be able to explain what a covalent bond is, what elements would create one, the name of the most common compound you get from this bond and the base unit(s) (or particle).

4) Be able to explain what a "ionic bond" (does not really exist) is, what elements would create one, the name of the compound you get from this "bond", and the base unit(s) (or particle).

5) Using the difference of Electronegativity (EN) between two atoms, be able to determine if it there is a covalent bond or ionic bond.

Covalent Bonding - General Information

1) Name the 3 parts of the Localized Electron Theory (chemical bonding model we use) and be able to explain what each part does.

2) Be able to name three different types of bonds and which one is a "true chemical bond".

3) Be able to determine if two atoms coming together would share ve- (form covalent bond) by knowing the ΔEN (Electronegativity difference).(Honors Chem328 students only)

4) Be able to name the two different species that have covalent bonding.

Covalent Bonding - Lewis Dot Structures (LDS)

1) Determine the Lewis Dot Structure (LDS) for covalent bonding species (e.g. molecular cpds and polyatomic ions). This includes 1)total number of valence electrons, 2)number and types of bonds and 3)number of lone pairs on central atom.

2020-2021 Objectives of Chemical Bonding

General Understanding of When Atoms Come Together

1) Be able to identify an element as metal, non-metal or semi-metals from its location on the Periodic Table.
2) Be able to explain what a covalent bond is, what elements would create one, the name of the most common compound you get from this bond and the base unit(s) (or particle).

3) Be able to tell if there is a covalent bond, "ionic bond" or metallic bond between two elements.

Lewis Dot Structures (LDS) - Ionic Bond

1) Be able to draw the LDS for Ionic compounds

2) From knowing the two elements coming together to form the Ionic compound, be able to show how valence electron go from the elemental form (show LDS) to the ion form (show LDS), draw the correct LDS for the ionic compound, give correct chemical formula and chemical name.

Covalent Bonding - General Information
(Note: look at Basic Covalent Bonding LDS Notes and HW)

1) Name the 3 parts of the Localized Electron Theory (chemical bonding model we use) and be able to explain what each part does.

2) Be able to name three different types of bonds and which one is a "true chemical bond".

1) Determine the Lewis Dot Structure (LDS) for covalent bonding species (e.g. molecular cpds and polyatomic ions). This includes 1)total number of valence electrons, 2)number and types of bonds and 3)number of lone pairs on central atom.

2)Be able determine when there is Resonance structures and how to draw them.

3) Be able to know which elements can exceed the Rule of Eight and be able to draw their LDS.

Bond Length and Bond Energy

1) Need to be able to determine which of three type of bonds (single, double and triple bond) has the longest/shortest bond length and/or bond energy and reason why.
