THIS LAB WILL BE MESSY, WILL REQUIRE A LOT OF CLEAN-UP and MAY STAIN

You will be using common Food coloring that can stain some ceramic surface if not cleaned up well. So please clean-up right after completing lab. AND I MEAN YOU CLEAN-UP NOT YOUR PARENTS. (YOUR MESS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY).

Materials
1) Sodium chloride (commonly called Table salt)
2) Sucrose (commonly called Sugar) 3) Food coloring 4) Vegetable oil or any "kind of" clear kitchen liquid oil 5) Soap (will use clear liquid detergent) 6) Tap water 7) PAM or other spray oil 8) Wooden stirring stick, straws or toothpick (need something to stir with) 9) Small glass or clear plastic cup/containers
10) Shallow depth flat glass or clear plastic container (e.g. 8"X 8" or so Pyrex/glass)
11) Sticky notes, tape or another way of marking containers
12) Magnifying glass (if don't have one, can get one at Dollar Store)
Directions

Except where specified, your measuring device will be your finger (tip of finger to 1st crease(where it bends) of your finger). FYI, that is about an inch.

Part I
1) Pour 1 inch of water into each of 3 containers (mark the containers A,B,C). Make observations.
2) Make observation of the salt and sugar (will not do food coloring) 3) Add a pinch of salt to container A, a pinch of sugar to container b and the smallest drop of food dye into container C (If available use blue or green color not red or yellow). 4) Stir slowly so not to add air bubbles (sometimes entrainment) 5) Make observations of each. (magnifying glass may help here). 6) Pour 1 inch of oil into each of 3 containers (mark the containers D,E,F) 7) Repeat Step 3 except salt = container D, sugar = container E, coloring = container F). 8) Stir slowing so not to add air bubbles (sometimes entrainment) 9) Make observations of each. (magnifying glass may help here).

Part II
1) Place about 1 inch of tap water into shallow container. Make observations.
2) Add one or two drops of oil into the water. Stir slowly. Make observations.
3) Add one drop from container C from Part I. Stir slowly. Make observations. Make sure to use the magnifying glass to make these observations.
4) Add in one drop of liquid soap. Stir slowly so not to add air bubbles (most likely get a few even if you do it right/well). Make observations.

Part III (optional if you have PAM or other spray oil)
1) Place what is left of solution from container C (and if need add some water so there a liquid level at bottom of "new" shallow container (does not need to be 8"X 8"). 2) Spray into the solution a "spray" or two from PAM or other spray oil. Use magnifying glass to make observations.
