The coefficients in a chemical equation represent the relative number of molecules and the relative number of moles of reacting substances. If the substances are gases at the same temperature and pressure, the coefficients also represent their relative volumes.

Avogadro's hypothesis- Equal volumes of all gases under the same conditions of temperature and pressure contain the same number of molecules.
