2020-2021 Objectives of Chemical Reactions and Stoichiometry

Essential Questions (EQ3): Do and/or how do basic particles interact - Rearrange?

The student should be able to:(bolded number are MA Framework Standard numbers)
1. Recognize Synthesis,Decomposition,Single Replacement,Double Replacement (including Neutralization), and Combustion given a chemical reaction.
2. Explain the significance of the coefficients of a balanced chemical reaction (number of particles and moles).
3. Balance chemical equations (by applying the law of conservation of mass).

4. Predicting Products of Single Replacement reactions and Double Replacement reactions. In addition, determine the net ionic reaction from a complete chemical reactions (single and double replacement rxns) (NOT FOR CP Chem329)

Energy change and Chemical Reactions
5. Be able to explain what two characteristics are needed for an Effective Collision and that all change requires an energy change.

6. Be able to define Activation energy (Eac), activated complex, heat of reaction (ΔH), exothermic reaction/process, and endothermic reaction/process. Also can be able to identify the correct sign of ΔH for an exo- or endothermic reaction. (CP Chem329 do not need to know sign convention)

7. Be able to label and draw a Potential Energy (PE) Diagram for an Exothermic and Endothermic reaction including indicating x and y axes, PE of reactants,Eac, PE of activated complex, PE of products and heat of reaction (ΔH).

8. Be able to indicate the difference between PE of reactant compared to PE products (less than or greater than) for an exothermic reaction and for an endothermic reaction.
