<u>Directions</u><br> 1. Obtain 6 small test tubes and mark them 1 - 6.<br> 2. Add Solution A to Test tube 1<br> 3. Add Solution B to Test tube 2<br> 4. Add a grain or two of salt to Test tube 1 and Test tube 2 and make observations. Stir each with a wooden stick (separate stick for each test tube). Make observations.<br> <br> <u>Observations</u><br> <br> <br> Answer the following Question, Which solution dissolved the salt? (write answer here)<br> <br> <br> 5. Add Solution A to Test tube 3. Add one drop of Red dye to Test tube 3. Stir with wooden sticks. Make observations. <br> 6. Add Solution A to Test tube 4. Add one drop of Green dye to Test tube 4. Stir with wooden stick (separate stick). Make observations. <br> 7. Add Solution B to Test tube 5. Add one drop of Red dye to Test tube 5. Stir with wooden stick (separate stick). Make observations.<br> 8. Add Solution B to Test tube 6. Add one drop of Green dye to Test tube 6. Stir with wooden stick (separate stick). Make observations.<br> <br> <u>Observations</u><br> Solution A with Red dye:<br> Solution A with Green dye:<br> Solution B with Red dye:<br> Solution B with Green dye:<br> <br> <br> 7. Take the Test tube that Red dye dissolved into and slowly pour it into the Test tube that the Green dye dissolved into (or visa versa). Wait for a few minutes then make observations.<br> <br> <u>Observations</u><br> <br> <br> <br> Answer the following questions:<br> <br> a. Did the two solutions dissolve in each other?<br> <br> b. What observation(s) lead you to that answer?<br> <br> c. Where is the solution that the salt dissolved into?<br> <br> d. What does that tell you about that solution?<br> <br> e. If the Solution A and Solution B is oil and water, which is which and how do you know?<br> <br> <br> <P style="page-break-before: always"> <br> <br> 8. Take a small amount of the white granular solid (not the salt) and add it to the above Test tube (one that you used in Step 7). Stir with a wooden stick (separate from other sticks). Make observations.<br> <br> <u>Observations</u><br> <br> 9. Take a new pipette and add a few drops of the resulting "solution" to a specimen slide and place it under the microscope. Make observations in words and a picture below.<br> <br> <br> <br> <br> Answer the following questions:<br> <br> a. What general shape do you see in the microscope.<br> <br> b. Did the two solution actually mix and create a homogenous mixture (called a solution). If not, then what did happen and is there a name for it?<br> <br> c. What do you think the white granular solid was?<br> <br> <br> Obtain a handout from your teacher.
