<center>Objectives of Energy - Revised 2015-2016</center> 
Essential Question (EQ1): Are there any basic skills/theory? 
The student should be able to: 
1a. Understand & give example of 1st Law of Thermodynamics (Thermo) including example of kinetic and potential energies. 
1b. Know the 2 different types of energy units. 
1c. Be able to explain that there are two parts to the universe, system and surrounding. 
1d Be able to explain the significance of the sign of the energy/heat value. ("+" sign indicate system absorb energy and "-" system releases energy) 
1e. Explain the difference between heat and temperature (known temperature definition verbatim). 
1f. Explain the difference between an absolute and relative temperature scale and give example of each. 
1g. Be able to calculate between Kelvin and Celcius temperature scales.
 
2a. Be able to state and explain "our" 2nd Law of Thermo: a) How energy flow from a higher temperature body to lower temperature body until the temperature are equal and b) When energy does flow, there is some "energy lost" (i.e. given to the surrounding) ) therefore not all the energy gets to where you want it to go. 
 
2b. Define enthalpy, what it means and how it relates to the 2nd Law of Thermo. 
2c. Using information from EndoExothermicReactionLab, explain the difference between an exothermic and endothermic reactions including activation energy and the difference between the <nowiki>PE</nowiki>R and <nowiki>PE</nowiki>P. Be able to reproduce Potential Energy diagrams

2d. Be able to explain Calorimetry, its equation (non-phase change heat equation) and be able to calculate calorimetry problems.(Not for 2017-2018) 
3a. Be able to explain what a spontaneous reaction/process means in Thermo. 
3b. Be able to explain that chemical reactions "stop" for two reasons, all reactants have been manipulated into products OR the difference of available or free energy change (called Gibbs Free Energy) between reactants and products has gone. 
3c. Be able to explain Gibbs Free Energy and related it to spontaneous reactions (include what the sign means) 
3d. Be able to explain that Gibbs Free (sometimes called Available) Energy is composed of two energies, Enthalpy and Entropy.

3e. Be able to define Entropy and what it means. 
3f. Be able to state and explain what the 3rd Law of Thermo means including absolute zero and how it requires two parts, 0K and perfect crystal. 
3g. Be able to explain how Entropy plays a role in the 3rd Law of Thermo.
