Day 1 (work for Tues 3/22 night, ask ? on Wed 3/23)
- Read and take notes on Zumdhal Section 8.1 - 8.3
- Review of Electronegativity trends on Periodic Table
- Be able to figure out bond polarity (either ionic or covalent bonds between 2 atoms)
- Pg399 #15a
- Read and take notes on Zumdahl Section 8.4 & 8.5 (Ions,Ionic bonds and Lattice Energy)
- Also will need to be able to calculate Coulomb's Law energy
- Will need to be able to calculate Lattice Energy from components (usually qual. comparison of two difference substances)
- Be able to draw a diagram showing making a Ionic compounds from element (in their phase) thru to Lattice Energy to explain overall heat of formation of ionic bond (e.g. Pg361 Fig 8.10)
- Pg399 #29, 35(any 2 of 6), 37, 41
- Read Section 8.8 (Bond energy and Heat of Reaction)
- Good example of calculating heat of reaction (Sample Ex 8., Pg369)
- Finding Heat of Reaction with Bond energies is different from all other Thermo equation, it is Reactant - Product, not Product - Reactants
- Pg400 #45, 47
Day 2
- Hybridization
- Organic Chemistry
- Alkanes - Read AP Section 22.1 (Pg1034-1042)
- Excluding Reactions of Alkane and Cyclic Akkane part
- Alkene and Alkynes - Read Section 22.2 (Pg1042-1044)
- Functional Group - AP Section 22.5 Hydrocarbon Derivatives Look at Table 22.5 Pg 1052)
- Difference between Structural and Geometric Isomers
- Hw for everything except Organic Chemistry
- Pg398 #17a,21,85
- Pg436 #30
- For the following species please give total # of valence electrons, central atom y / n, types of bonds, # of bonds of each type, lone pair on central atom, bond angle, shape of molecules, electronic shape, hybridization (always on central atom), if needed Resonance structure, Formal charge, and Lewis Dot Structure. Many of these are already done as you fill in the example space/block in [Worksheet for Molecular Polarity]
