Lab Questions For Determining An Empirical Formula

ChemistryWiki | RecentChanges | Preferences

1) Using your knowledge of naming ionic compounds and determining their chemical formula, determine the actual name & chemical formula (do not use lab information) for when magnesium and oxygen combine.

2) What color and phase (s,L,g) was the product?

3) Most all the crucible looked like they were "dirty". Why could you use the crucible even if there was solid at bottom of the crucible (it is assumed that the crucible has been used in several lab before you used it).

4) Besides from massing problems and calculating problems, what lab error could account for the reason you did not get the correct Empirical formula?

5) A sample of sulfur having a mass of 1.28g combines with oxygen to form a compound with a mass of 3.20g. Show the work to determine the Empirical formula (EF).

6a) Write the reactants and product(s) including phase from your lab info and knowledge of how to make compounds (use your knowledge of compound writing to determine product's subscript). Showing all work, determine what is oxidized, what is reduce, oxidizing agent, reducing agent, and balance the reaction. Then rewrite the balanced complete chemical reaction and show work to find the net ionic reaction.

6b)For 2018-2019 CP Learners, replace 6a with this 6b. Write the balanced chemical reaction for when magnesium and oxygen combine in this lab.
