Objectives of Energy (Revised 2013)

Essential Question: Are there any basic skills/theory in the study of chemistry?

The student should be able to:(bolded number are MA Framework Standard numbers)
Show all work in mathematical problems as stated in class.

Energy
1. Understand and give example of the Law of Conservation of Energy including giving example of kinetic and potential energies.[10.1](6.4)
2. Understand and be able to explain the 2nd and 3rd Law of Thermodynamics.

3. Explain the difference between heat and temperature.[6.2]
4. Memorize my definition of temperature and explain the difference between an absolute and relative temperature scale.
5. Explain the Kinetic Molecular Theory and how it applies to temperature and 2nd Law of Thermodynamics.[1.1], [1.3](1.3)

6. Using information from EndoExothermicReactionLab, explain the difference between an exothermic and endothermic reactions including activation energy and the difference between the PER and PEP.[10.3](6.4)

7. Be able to explain Calorimetry and be able to calculate calorimetry problems.

Vocabulary (not complete list)
Thermodynamics, Energy, Potential Energy, Kinetic Energy, Kinetic Molecular Theory, Gas versus vapor, Law of Conservation of Mass (1st Law of Thermo),2nd Law of Thermo, 3rd Law of Thermo, Heat, Three Modes of Heat Flow, temperature, Entropy, Coulomb force (CF), Absolute Zero, Absolute Temperature Scale, Relative Temperature Scale, Endothermic reaction, exothermic reaction, Dimensional Analysis.

Not done in Year 2013-2014
1. Give the 3 types of Mode of Heat/energy Flow and how they are different (i.e. what is between energy source and energy receiver).
2. Be able to identify the heating/energy sources and usage in your house and how they used/work.(see notes from Energy at Home Handout)
3. Be to reproduce and explain (using KMT) the heating curve, difference between a gas and vapor, updated definition of boiling and difference between evaporation and boiling (see notes from Phase of Matter Lab)
