Objectives of Mass and Matter

Essential Question: Do you believe that? (theory explains observations)
Enduring Understanding: In = Out for Mass and Energy

The student should be able to:(bolded number are MA Framework Standard numbers)
Show all work in mathematical problems as stated in class.

Mass
1. Understand the Law of Conservation of Mass .[10.1]
2. Explain the difference between physical and chemical properties including providing examples.[1.1](1.1)
3. Explain the difference between intensive and extensive properties including providing examples.
4. Explain the difference between chemical change (i.e. chemical reaction ) and a physical process.[1.4](1.1)
5. State the four observations for a chemical reaction.
6. Differentiate between an element, compound and mixture.[1.2](1.2)
7. Differentiate between a heterogeneous and homogeneous mixture including providing examples.
8. Understand the difference between elements, mixtures and compounds.(1.2)[1.2](1.2)
9. Explain the three reason why mixtures and compounds are different including how homogeneous mixture is different from compound.
10. Differentiate between a solution (homogeneous solution), colliod, and a suspension. Not on 2008-2009 test
11. Be able to explain how the particles of solid, liquid, and gas are different, the energies of these particles. Also be able to relate to the standard heating curve (Temp vs. Energy graph.)
12. Be able to define temperature and compound (exactly as I have defined them). Only definition need to know verbadum.
