Phase of Matter Goals
The student will be able to:
- Define what pressure is the various types of pressure including barometric and normal pressure. (11.2,11.3)
- Draw a heating curve and locate the following on this curve:(11.5-11.7,11.11,
- Normal melting point, normal boiling point
- Solid, liquid and gas phase areas
- Heat of Fusion
- Heat of Vaporation
- Critical temperature and pressure
- Explain how the energy is used through each area of the heating curve
- Calculate the heat/energy needed to go through phase change (called Latent Heat), through non-phase change (change that stay within a single phase, called Sensible Heat), and through both phase and non-phase change systems.
- Relate critical temperature to Intermolecular Forces (IF) and boiling/melting points.
- Relate how IF and mass (that is mass/given #) of a substance helps to determine boiling/melting points of a substance.
- Explain the Kinetic molecular theory and how it relates to evaporation
- Explain the difference between evaporation and boiling points.
