As shown in [Voltaic Cell - Example of Work], for the Daniel/voltaic Cell Lab, in the Calculation section, one will do the following for each of the 2 cell made in this lab (Online lab, Online Lab for Electrochemical Cell, not actual lab done in class) :
1. Complete balanced reaction including what is oxidized, what is reduced, oxidizing agent, reducing agent including all appropriate work.
2. Write the Oxidation half cell reaction and its Eo (in Volts) and below this line, write the Reduction half cell and its Eo ( in Volts). One will find these Volts in the Standard Reduction Potential Table ([Standard Reduction Potential Table, Condensed Table]). If your half cell this not there, use [Larger Standard Reduction Potential Table].
3. Then write an "addition line" below these and add the two half cell together to get the overall reaction (its is the net ionic reaction) and add the two half cell volts to get Eocell ( in Volts), the Volts of the overall reaction called the "cell".
4. Then one Draws the appropriate "picture" of the Daniel/voltaic cell from the above information using the "picture" in the example problem in [Voltaic Cell - Example of Work] as a reference.
Questions for Daniel/voltaic/galvanic Cell Lab
1. From the information from one's data table, what happened to the Voltage as the reaction occurring.
2. Why does the voltage decrease as the reaction occurs (Hint: Explain use information about energy).
3. What would the voltage be if/when the reaction "stops". Explain
4. What component of the cell would cause the cell to stop working and why would it happen? (Assume you can't change the alligator clips).
5. What would happen if you did not use the same metal as the metal ions in the half cell (in other words decided to use a dissimilar metals for the electrode?).
6. What is the phrase you memorize/remember to help you with creating these cells (both section). What does it mean?
