Pirate Day
Morning
- Read some children books
- Hey, Little Ant (about how everything is similar to everything else)
- Sand by Ellen Prayer (about sand how it is made, where it comes from, different types)
- How we learned earth is round by Lauber (history explanation of how we figured it out)
- How much is a million (ways to understand magnitude of number, will adapt it to mole
- Made Cartisian Divers, show density of substance & pressure
- Powers of Ten Video (from Ames) - did not look at it in class but said was good source for magnitude
- Walk the plank
- Egg dropping contest (engineer, design) both egg support and then with egg by itself
- make sure to let kids change design if need be between unsupport and supported egg
- Haul Away the Bounty
- Make Al foil ships (that you will foat on water)
- See how many washers can put on Al foil ships
- Get container of pre-separated Al foil
- Give each group 3 pieces of Al foil
- Covers engineering and density
- Alka Sellsor Cannons
- Use template and have kids make cannon with straws
- Need to get the film canisters that hold on inside not over top
- Student put a few drop of water in canister and put tablet in container and cap
- Make sure to have cap side down so container is the cannon ball
- Karen showed here 3D models (magnet) that shows ionic cpd (table salt) and molecules (water)
- Would be good visual on how ionic cpds are just make up of ions and molecules are not.
- Also was given a Pirates treasure map (a picture of an island with grid on it)
- Would be good as a review game for test
- Answers to questions are whole numbers that you count blocks for directions to the treasure.
