Take Home Portion Of Periodic Table Test

ChemistryWiki | RecentChanges | Preferences

Attention All Students, there are two part to the Take Home portion of the Periodic Table Test.

1. Your Notes on Periodic Trend (Take Home Test)

You will need to print out a copy of this webpage. You are limited to one side of the paper unless you use figure/diagrams where you can go onto the back of the page (you can use back side as much space as the diagrams are). Information on this page can be in outline form but it needs to be understood by the teacher. A "solid" block of words is not what I am looking for. A mix of diagrams and text would work better (sorry all you English majors). Remember, this page is where you are showing me that you know the concept you will need to teach. A maximum score of 10pts will be given to this section.

2. Learner Notes on Periodic Trend ake Home Test)

Once you have finished teaching the concept to your "learner", the learner will need to explain what they have been taught. The learner will do is by printing out the above webpage and then writing what they have learned. Unlike the above section, the learner can writing a block of text to explain what they have been taught. There is no length requirement for the learner (as short or as long as they need). Both the teacher (i.e. "my student") and the learner need to sign the bottom of this webpage. A maximum score of 10pts will be given to this section.

The learner must be out of high school (assumed older than 18yrs old) and can not be a teacher at our school (unless they are also one's parents).

3. Finished Product

Make sure that you have your name and period on both webpages and that you and your learner have signed and dated the appropriate webpage. Then staple them together and pass them into your teacher.

Due Date: To be determined (for 20009-2010 P1 & P5 by April Vacation, P2 1st day after vacation

I think this exercise will be enlightening in two ways. First, it will show that even though you may not think it, you know a lot more chemistry than most people. Second, to teach something, you must know it better than if you did not have to teach it. Good Luck

Chooses of Periodic Trends

For the following chooses, when you see the statement, explain the general trend, you must give both the trend and reason why for both Down a group and Across a period. Each should be a separate section.

1. Give the two major factors that contribute to the columbic force (CF) between the nucleus and the valence electrons. Then explain the general trends for CF. In a final sentence, explain if the valence electrons are more tightly held or more loosely held as you, 1) go down a group and 2) across a period.

2. Define Atomic Radii(size). Then , explain the general trends for AR. In a final sentence, explain if the valence electrons are more tightly held or more loosely held as you, 1) go down a group and 2) across a period and how it relates to the atomic radii/size.

3. Define Ionization Energy (IE). Then explain the general trends for IE. In a final sentence, explain how the IE relates to how tightly or loosely held the valence electrons are to the nucleus. Do not do Exception to the Across the period IE trend

4. State the definition of Electronegativity (EN) and explain the general trends for EN. In a final sentence, explain if the valence electrons are more tightly held or more loosely held as you, 1) go down a group and 2) across a period and how it relates to EN.(Can Not Do for 2010 year)

5. Define Metallic Characteristics (MC). Then, explain the general trend for MC. In a final sentence, explain what a metallic bond is and why metals would form these types of bonds instead of non-metals.(Can Not Do for 2010 year)
