Objectives of Solution - Revised 2009

Essential Question: Essential Questions (EQ4): Do and/or how do basic particles interact - Stay same?

Each student will be able to:

1. Be able to explain the differences between solutions, colloids, and suspensions. Be able to explain the properties of a solution including the Tyndal effect.

2. Determine and explain miscibility and dissolving of two subtances using knowledge of IMF including in words and in drawing pictures.[7.1](7.1). [Animated Website of Sodium Chloride dissolving in water].

3. Explain the difference between unsaturated solution, saturated solution (Ksp), saturated solution with solid solute on bottom and be able to identify their location on a solubility curve. Explain what a supersaturated solution is. Specifically, for saturated solution be able to explain how it is a dynamic equilibrium condition [7.3].

4. Identify and explain (using words) the factors that affect the rate of dissolving, i.e., temperature, concentration, and mixing (stirring, powderizing).[7.2](7.3)

5. Calculate concentration in terms of molarity, molality, and solubility.[7.4]. Use molarity to perform solution dilution (i.e. do dilution calculations) and solution stoichiometry.(7.2). Be able to obtain a solubility value from a solubility curve [7.5]. and be able to explain how solubility changes with temperature for both ionic solid and gas solutes.
