Answer the following question either incomplete sentences (including any graphs when needed) or showing all work (including sig fig, units,etc)
1. Answer the following questions in complete sentences. What is the name of the theory (and give a one sentence explanation) that all of kinetics are based on? For my class, what two words must be in all answers (except reaction mechanism problems) and what two factors determines it.
2. Using the format (steps 1-4 and kinetic diagram) given in the last class, explain three different ways you can increase the rate of reaction. You will need to use the back of this page in addition to the space below.
3. One mechanism for the destruction of ozone (O3) in the upper atmosphere is
O3(g) + NO(g) --> NO2(g) + O2(g) Slow
NO2(g) + O(g) --> NO(g) + O2(g) Fast
__________________________________________________________________________________________
O3(g) + O(g) ---> 2 O2(g) Overall Reaction
(It may be easier to answer a & b if you first thing about the definitions)
a. Which species are catalysts.
b. Which species are intermediate.
c. I did some experiments and found that if I increased the concentration of O3, the rate of reaction increased and if I increased the concentration of O(g), the rate of reaction also would increase. Does the above reaction mechansim support this data or not? Explain.
