These are additional experimental steps/stations to the [[Physical and Chemical Change Lab]].<br> <br> <br> As with the rest of this lab, you will make observation BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER change has occurred.<br> <br> <u>Step A</u><br> <br> 1) Obtain a clean test tube (so also test tube holder and rack).<br> 2) Add DI water to about 1/3 of the volume of the test tube and make observations.<br> 3) Add a small amount of Copper (II) sulfate {Ca<sub>1</sub><nowiki>(SO</nowiki><sub>4</sub>)<sub>1</sub>} solid to the water. Make observation of solid before adding to water.<br> 4) Dissolve as much as the solid as possible with just shaking the test tube (not all solid will dissolve right away, so you will not a "true solution" but that is Ok.). Record observation of solution.<br> 5) Add 5 drops of the Barium chloride {Ba<sub>1</sub>Cl<sub>2</sub>} solution (after observing solution) to the test tube. Make observations.<br> 6) Wait two to three minutes to let settle out. Observation both solids and liquid (actually a solution). It is ok to go to next step even if there is some of the solid that has not settle out.<br> <br> 7) Observe the sodium carbonate {Na<sub>2</sub>(CO<sub>3</sub>)<sub>1</sub>} solution before adding 20 drops or more of this solution to the test tube. <br> <br> 8) Let settle and make observations of the solid and the liquid (again actually a solution maybe not though).<br> <br> <u>Step B</u><br> <br> 1) Make observations of a piece of Magnesium (Mg) ribbon.<br> 2) Place Mg ribbon on the crucible tongs and expose ribbon to flame (need to make sure you use tip of inside flame). <br> 3) As the change is occurring, put the Mg ribbon over an evaporating dish to collect the product(s).<br> 4) Make observation of the change and products after.<br> <br> <br> <u>Step C</u><br> <br> Teacher will demonstrate difference between solution, colloid and suspension so you will be putting direction, observation directly into your notebook.<br> <br> <br> <br>
