4ai) Discovered electron. He exposed a magnet to what looked like a beam of "green light" coming out of a piece of metal (i.e. atom of a metal). Beam deflected away from the negative side of magnet meaning "green light" was actually particles that were negatively charged.

6) Nucleus has three characteristics. 
They were determined from observing a"smaller than atom" positive particles being "shot" at a gold atom (gold leaf) to see where they went after going thru atom. Here is what was found out (three characteristics of nucleus):

a) Massive (most of mass) - A very few bounce particles bounced back 
b) Small volume (atom mostly empty space) - most particle "passed straight thru" 
c) Positively charge - some particle deflected a little 
 
So atom is made up of nucleus and rest of volume is mostly empty space where electrons are located.
