2002-2003 Honors Chemistry Class Policy (Mr. McLeod) 1. Rules of Conduct and Behavior : a. Be respectful of the teacher and classmates. b. Be "on-time" or have a "good reason" 2. Notebook Keeping a daily written record of all activities and information presented in class is absolutely essential to understanding the course work. If you miss a class period for any reason, you should get the information you missed from a reliable colleague. Learning to take good notes in a subject as abstract as chemistry is an excellent preparation for a college experience. Study groups are highly recommended. 3. Daily Log For each class, a "daily log" will be completed by one learner. The main reason for the log is to provide a list of activities completed that day and homework assigned. A calendar indicating the day each person will be required to complete the daily log will be posted at the beginning of each term. If you are absent on your assigned day, you must pre-arrange for someone else to complete this task. You will, then, be required to complete the daily log on the day that person was supposed to complete the task. The teacher needs to be notified of the changes. The attached daily log sheet must be completed by the end of the class. A grade will be given for this task. 4. Homework Homework is an activity that helps you to expand the class experience. It reinforces concepts introduced in class by giving you a chance to practice skills and helps you to find areas that you may not fully understand. These assignments should be completed in your notebooks including 1) the question in a paraphrased form and 2) process/steps for determining the answer. SIMPLY A NUMBER ANSWER OR WRITTEN ANSWER (WITHOUT JUSTIFICATION) IS NOT AN ANSWER. Periodically, homework will be graded. It is due at the beginning of class. Absent learners must show homework by next class or you get a zero for the assignment. I don't grade for correctness but if you tried. So, if you don't know the answer, at least put down as many steps as possible. Blank answers are considered not done and I will take off the grade for them. PLEASE UNDERSTAND : "READING" means both "READING AND TAKING NOTES" 2002-2003 328 Honors Chemistry Class Policy (Mr. McLeod) Page 2 5. Labs The lab experience is a major part of the course. Hopefully, the labs will help in understanding the concepts being discussed in class. Lab handouts will be given out and will be reviewed before completing labs. Specific lab reports will be collected and graded. Lab material can be included on the chapter tests/quizzes. No food or drink will be allowed in the lab area or during lab days. No "horseplay" will be tolerated during labs. If this occurs, the offending student(s) will be removed from the lab and will receive a grade of zero on the lab. Further offenses will affect the learners ability to perform other labs. REMEMBER, SAFTEY IS PRIORITY ONE IN LAB. When collected, late labs will lose credit. All labs are due on the due date. If you are going to be absent, have someone else bring in the lab on the due date. 6. Tests/Quizzes Announced and unannounced quizzes will be periodically given. If you are absent, the quiz must be made up before the next class (i.e. come and see ASAP to make up quiz). Test will be given at the end of each chapter. These tests will be announced well in advance. Absent learners must make-up the test within 2 school days or an agreed upon time with the teacher. Class tests will not be given back until all learners have completed the test. Unless specified during the term, there is no other extra credit work available. 7. Extra Help Every learner will at times need extra help. You are encouraged to use your classmate as the first resource. If you are still having problems, I am available for extra help before or after school. However, there will be days when I must leave at 2:20PM. YOU NEED TO CHECK THE CALENDAR ON SIDE WALL TO SEE THE DAYS I AM BUSY. Recognizing the need for help and taking appropriate steps to get it are important aspects of the course. 2002-2003 328 Honors Chemistry Grading Policy (Mr. McLeod) The overall grade for this course will be based on a point system. Simply add up all your points and divide by the maximum number of points to obtain your grade. Since I have a computer program doing this calculation, we will round to the "ones-digit". Therefore, the grades will have either 2 or 3 "significant figures". The following is an example of the point system. If this system needs to be changed, I will inform you at the beginning of Term 2. 1. Daily Log Complete log 10pts 2. Homework Up to 20pts. Usually only grade chapter review homework but can check anytime 3. Labs Up to 30pts Not all labs will be graded. You lose 5 pts for each school day you are late. 4. Notebook At this time I don't think I will give a grade. However, if I find out that students are not keeping "good" notes, I will grade the notebook and it can be unannounced and any points I feel necessary. If absent on day of notebook check, I want to see notebook on the next day. 5. Quizzes Up to 20 pts 6. Tests Up to 100 pts Must take the test within 2 school days or as agreed to with teacher. After that, you lose 10 pts per school day. FOR EXAMPLE: Task Your score Maximum score Homework 8 10 Lab 15 20 Test 87 100 ----- ----- Total 110 130 Your grade 110/130 = 84.6 rounded to 85 Periodically, I will give a list of all grades for the learner (up to that date in the term) and their overall term grade. An example of the grade sheet from the computer is attached. 2002-2003 328 Chemistry Level 1 Daily Journal Every day, the following must be recorded and filed: 1. The DATE recorded on the given notebook form. 2. Any student that are ABSENT will be recorded on the given notebook form. (refer to seating chart if needed). 3. The CLASS SUMMARY is a summary of the class activities (i.e. pre-lab, watched video, etc). 4. Any HANDOUTS (i.e. worksheets, labs, etc.) that are given out should be placed in binder. (there should be enough for each absent person plus one for the binder). 5. The HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT for that day will be written on the sheet. A new student will be required to complete the above task for each class period. Refer to the calendar on the classroom wall for your assigned day. PLEASE pick up the appropriate class period binder before class begins. When the class is over and you have completed the appropriate form, 3-hole punch the form and place in the binder. The most recent day should be on the top.
