Homework For Bond And Molecular Polarity

Chemistry 2 Wiki | RecentChanges | Preferences

Part I
Using the values from the [Electronegativity Table], and showing all subtractions, determine if the bonds between the following elements are
a. Ionic bonds, only need to say “Ionic”
b. Non-polar covalent bonds (non-polar), simple write atom with a single bond between (Cl and O deltaEN=math, Cl-O)
c. Polar covalent bonds, Show separate structure with bond and above it the correct arrow designation (+-->) for polar bond.
(Look at [Bond Polarity] handout for specifics)

a. C - H

b. O - F

c. C - O

Part II
Using the [Molecular Polarity] handout, indicate the following for species below
a. # and types of bonds
b. # of lone pairs on the central atom
c. Geometry of the compound
d. Show the bond polarity of each bond (including delta EN values and correct arrow designation for polar bond)
e. Determine if the compound is non-polar or polar (called dipole) molecule again see [Molecular Polarity] handout for details

1. CF4

2. H2O

3. CO2
