Basic Mole Concept Notes
(Grouping Unmeasurable Particles)

Mole Concept - Grouping unmeasurable particles in order to be able to measure them.

What do chemist "observe", measure besides Temperature?
a)
b)
c)

What did Dalton say about matter?

How much mass does it have?

Can we measure it?

Lorenzo Romano Amedeo Carlo Avogadro de Quaregna e di Cerreto (better known as Amedeo Avogadro) - What did he say about Law of Combining Volumes (of gases).

How many number of particles do need to group together so you can measure it?

___________________ (it is called Avogadro's Number)

Mole relationships

1.0 mole = _______________ particle = ____________ g

Mole Massing (One Step Mole Calculation Massing)

New definition of Atomic mass:

Look at your [MCAS Periodic Table], find the atomic mass of an element (remember it is decimal number in the element box on the Periodic Table).

For 1st year students, you round the atomic mass (in the element) to WHOLE NUMBER to get atomic mass used in Mole Massing calculation.

Ex. Carbon atomic mass is 12g C
                                           1 mole C
Exception: Chlorine: 35.5g Cl
                                 1 mole Cl
