To solve Gas Law, Avogadro's Hypothesis, Ideal Gas Laws, and Combined Gas Law Problems, follow the steps below:
1. How many conditions in the problem?
- A condition is what you see if you look at a balloon (a gas container). If you then do something to the balloon (for example, increase the gas temp) and now the volume has changed (increased if kept all other parameters constant), you have 2 conditions. The original look of the balloon (Condition 1) and now the new look of the balloon after changing the temperature (Condition 2).
2. What (parameters) is being held constant in the problem?
3. From Steps 1 & 2, determine the correct math equation for this problem. (Only Method I will Except)
- To determine correct math equation, start off with original equation. Then in the next line, put down the unknown parameter (i.e. P2 ) then an equals sign. To complete the other side of the equation sign, do the following:
- you first put down the parameter at the original condition (i.e. P1)
- you now will simply multiply it by a ratio of the other parameters. How do know what parameter goes on top and bottom? Write out the (---) and put the original condition parameter where they should go. You will have a blank in ever (---), so fill in the blanks with original condition parameters. 4. Write down known informations and unknown. (Convert to appropriate units, if necessary)
5. Plug in known information into equation to solve for unknown (i.e. P2)
6. Do math (as per rules you have been following all year)
7. Get answer in correct units & sig fig. Then check answer with general understand of Gas laws.
