Objectives of 2nd Section of Chemical Reactions and Redox Reaction
Essential Question: Do you believe that? (theory explains observations)
Enduring Understanding: ?????
The student should be able to:(bolded number are MA Framework Standard numbers):
1. Write chemical names and/or chemical formula.
2. Calculate percent yield (PercentYield) in a chemical reaction including problems where you must calculate the theoretical yield (sometimes called stoichiometric yield) from reactant information. (5.6)
3. Explain limiting reactant and excess reactant and explain when you need to do these limiting reactant problems.(Non-math concept)
4. Using the Activity Series Table (I call it Strength Table), determine if the single replacement reaction occurs or not,(SingleReplacement):
- If the reaction does not occur, use appropriate description for why it does not.
- If the reaction does occur, show balanced complete chemical reaction including phases. Then show all work to obtain net ionic reaction (NetIonicReactions).
3. State the three types of products (need only one of them) that must be present in a double replacement reaction for it to occur. (DoubleReplacement).
4. Using the Solubility Table (Solubility Table), determine if a double replacement reaction occurs or not, (Double Replacement - Solid Formed):
- If the reaction does not occur, show all species canceling out as spectator ions in the net ionic reaction (NetIonicReactions).
- If it does occur, write the balanced complete chemical reaction including phases. Then show all work to obtain net ionic reaction.
5. Determine the oxidation number,(OxidationNumber), of all species in elements & cpds. (8.4)
6. Determine if a chemical reaction is a Redox reaction or not. (Notes on Oxidation-Reduction Reactions)(8.4)
7. Use appropriate drawings and explanation, determine which reactant species will be oxidized & reduced and which will oxidizing agent and reducing agent. (Notes on Oxidation-Reduction Reactions)(8.4)
Things needed to be memorized
- Seven diatomic elements
- Phases of all elements at room temperature (get info from Periodic Table)
- Everything you memorized from Chemical Naming & Mole Concept Chapter
Things that can be in the folder
- Percent Yield equation
- Activity series table (I call it Strength Table) (for single replacement reactions)
- Solubility Table (for one of the three types of Double Replacement reactions)
